Below we list some of the best known pedigreed cats and their specific hereditary diseases and testing options. The individual names of the hereditary diseases are not discussed, since there is already enough information material on the net.


British Shorthair, -Longhair / Persian / Chartreux / Exotic / Selkirk Rex

Hereditary diseases:

HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)

Investigation options:
HCM: Sound. In breeding before the first breeding use.
Repetition approx. every 1-2 years until the 6th/7th year. Year of life.
Genetic inheritance tests are not meaningful, as they are intended for other breeds.
PKD: Sonic or hereditary test for the PKD1 gene. The sound is only meaningful from the 1st year of life – before that, however, in the case of an affected disease, it is already possible.
PKD1 gene is present in Persians as well as their outcrosses.


Maine Coon

Hereditary diseases:

HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), hip dysplasia, PK (pyruvate kinase deficiency), SMA (spinal muscular atrophy).

Investigation options:
HCM: Sound & Inheritance Test. In breeding before the first breeding use.
